Dundee is at the beating heart of creative innovation

As the only UNESCO City of Design in the UK, Dundee is at the beating heart of creative innovation.

Whether it's developing, programming or animation, Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire is renowned as one of the UK’s top clusters in games development.

There are over a dozen different video game developers and some of the world’s most-played computer games have been created and developed here, including Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto and Minecraft. More than 1500 people are employed in the creative industries in the city – a sector which boasts 200 companies with a combined annual turnover of more than £100m.

Its games development success has been supported by internationally renowned Abertay University, an institution with a focus on creative and digital technologies. Its computer science department was the first to launch a degree covering the study of computer games, ranked one of the best in the world.

Today its course offering includes game development, design and production.

As well as it being a significant player in the worldwide phenomena of video gaming, the region’s long history of excellence in the creative arts includes iconic comic books like The Beano.

Perth College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, is the first in Scotland to receive course accreditation from the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA). It offers honours degrees in Music Business and Popular Music.

Creative innovations aren’t just confined to the artist’s studio… at the James Hutton Institute, researchers have developed the Soil Indicators for Scottish Soils app which enable growers, farmers and land managers in Scotland to quickly identify soil types in their area.

The V&A Dundee is the UK’s only museum of design built outside of London, and a real testament to the strength of creative endeavours in the region.
